Road to a Healthy Scalp

Updated: Apr 11, 2019

Let's discuss scalps for a minute

Ok, so there I was, a young child - maybe 5th or 6th grade, suffering from a scalp condition. I remember it was embarrassing even as a kid. I don't even remember having the courage to tell my mom or dad something was wrong. I recall going to my dads house, every other weekend, because that's what kids divorced parents do, and I would be so happy because I would be able to wash my head with my father's dandruff shampoo. It seemed to help and I didn't have to say anything to anyone. I could keep my secret safe! Why was I so ashamed of my own body and what was going on?? It seems so silly now. It was just a little flaky, itchy scalp!

But as the years went on, it seemed to get worse. I ended up trying about every scalp treatment on the market, as well as discussing it at my dermatology appointments. It's been "diagnosed" as dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, scalp psoriasis, and maybe another name I can't remember right now. Anyhow, my scalp itched, flaked, oozed, scabbed, and peeled in layers (I'll explain). So, the itching and flakes I could semi-deal with. The rest was a hard no! My scalp would have layer, upon layer, upon layer of dead skin that would start to build up and eventually, I would have to take a really thin comb, slide it under the thick layer of dead skin and legitimately peel it off. It would come in patches. My scalp would be red and exposed under that - tender and open if you will. I would have areas that would "tend" to get these layers from time to time. I would remove it. It would scab, then heal. Then, be ok. Then, start all over again. All the while, the rest of my scalp would just be dry and flaky.

My one dermatologist said "It's just dandruff, use Head & Shoulder's" - so I did, and about every other dandruff shampoo out there. I tried coconut oil treatments, tea tree oil, peppermint oil, castor oil, olive oil, lemon, apple cider vinegar, baking soda, charcoal shampoos, t-gel shampoos, tar shampoos, and rx treatments such as DERMA-SMOOTHE-FS Oil and other sprays. The one that seemed to control it the best was Head & Shoulder's Clinical Strength. Next time you are at the store, take a sniff. It STINKS! At least I think it does. And when you sweat or get hot, the smell lingers! I hated the smell of it. It reminded me of a grandpa. Now, that's another level of embarrassment.

How could shampoo this brightly colored orange be good for me?

And let's not even get into potential side effects from steroid based RX treatments!

So, when my friend was growing her hair out at lightning speeds and I wanted my "mom bob" to grow faster, I decided "why not?" I'll jump on the Monat Train. I am cheap or thrifty or whatever you call it. So, I joined as a Market Partner. I would get 30% off instead of 15% as a VIP and I figured, if it made my hair better, I could probably sell it just like her too. So, it was a win, win! It even has a 30 day, money back guarantee. I figured, if it sucked, I would just return it and get my money back. I've NEVER been in direct sales before. I was the "eye-roller" when it came to this biz. I was a SKEPTIC! But, my hair started growing so fast. It was really healthy. But, my biggest surprise was that I had not used any of my former scalp treatments and my scalp was actually shiny it was so clean and clear. I was shocked! I was also ecstatic I didn't "smell like an old man" anymore.

As my scalp adjusted and I began trying more products, I found that the "magic potion for me" was Monat Black 2-in-1 for my first wash (the peppermint oil in it helps with anything funky growing and it's clarifying, so it cleanses away any build up), then Renew for my second wash (because my scalp would be on the dryer side without it and it is our most moisturizing shampoo) - not scalp related, but I will use the Replenish Masque once a week and then Smoothing Deep Conditioner. Back to the scalp, I do weekly Rejuvenique Oil scalp treatments - soaking my scalp in oil and leave it on over night. Rejuvenique oil is molecularly small enough to absorb instead of sitting on top of your hair or scalp. Rejuvenique will "nourish and energize your scalp with an invigorating blend of 13+ Natural Plant and Essential Oils rich in omega fatty acids, antioxidants and nutrients highly compatible with the skin and hair. As a result, the hair looks instantly healthier with long-lasting shine." Any time I may feel a "flare up" or if I go too many days without washing, I do an oil treatment. I wash every 2-3 days now and my scalp remains clear of build up. I haven't had to "comb out" my layers of dead skin in forever. I also massage my Blow Out Cream into my scalp as I am applying it to my hair. It's kind of like applying lotion to your ashy legs. It just helps. But also doesn't leave my hair greasy.

On another note, I so thankful that I don't have to use toxic products on my scalp or body anymore. Some of the ingredients are frightening in my old products. Orange shampoo can't be healthy and the RX contained steroids, which I try to stay away from when possible. I'm not a big "let's run to the doctor every time get a sniffle."

I've been using Monat since October of 2017 - 17 months as of right now. I have not used any "dandruff" treatments since I started. That is unheard of with this scalp. I just have to make sure I stick to my regimen and not go longer than 3 days without washing, and I'm good. You can't just "hide" flakes in this dark hair! They just aren't there! This could work for you too. We just need to figure out your regimen. Take the hair quiz or send me a message. Let's talk. Or if another Market Partner has shared this with you, you can contact them directly as well. I just can't say enough about these products and could not be more pleased with my results. After-all, healthy hair that grows super fast starts with a healthy scalp.

Disclaimer: Monat as a company does not claim to be able to heal medical conditions such as dandruff, psoriasis, or dermatitis. These are my own personal results and testimony. Nothing else has ever worked as well as Monat does - for me.
